Seven Arrest After Rs 600,000 Worth Of Heroin Seized In Cité Kennedy, Quatre-Bornes

A raid by police officers from the Flying Squad of the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (Adsu) at police headquarters in Casernes Centrales on the evening of Wednesday 19 July resulted in seven arrests and the seizure of 1,694 doses of heroin, or 132.80 grams. The market value of these drugs is Rs 677,600. A sum of Rs 8400, which is suspected to have come from the sale of this drug, was also seized. The seven suspects were arrested on a charge of drug trafficking.

On the basis of certain information and after hours of surveillance, this team of police officers led by Assistant Superintendent of Police Vineshwar Bahadoor arrived at the home of a 33-year-old man in Cité Kennedy, Quatre-Bornes at around 10.05pm on Wednesday 19. The man, who is in his thirties, is suspected of being involved in illegal trafficking. Armed with a search warrant, a search was carried out in the presence of his brother, as the thirty-year-old was absent at the time of the raid. The search uncovered a transparent plastic bag containing 1,694 doses of heroin. But the suspect was not present.

The seven people present at the time were arrested. They are a 23-year-old welder from Cité Barkly, Beau Bassin, a 20-year-old helper from NHDC, Baie du Tombeau, another 18-year-old helper from Roche-Bois, a 32-year-old painter from Cité Kennedy, Quatre-Bornes, a 21-year-old car washer from Grand Baie, a 26-year-old dancer from Case Noyale and a 28-year-old hairdresser from Batterie Cassée, Roche-Bois.

Drug Trafficking

The seven suspects were arrested and placed in various detention centres. They were brought before the Rose-Hill court on the morning of Friday 20 July. They were subsequently returned to police cells.

In addition, on the morning of Wednesday 19 July, police officers from the Trou aux Biches Adsu raided Cité Sainte Claire, Goodlands, after receiving information that a local hairdresser was selling drugs. When the police arrived at around 10.20am, an individual was standing on an overgrown plot of land and had to run off after throwing away a transparent plastic bag. The plastic contained ninety-six doses of the synthetic drug, totalling 15.1 grams. The suspect was pursued, but managed to escape.

The 28-year-old suspect, who is known to the police, is being actively sought.
