The main suspect of the case of the Champ de Mars track sabotage was released after posting bail of Rs 10,000 and signing a debt recognizance of Rs 50,000. The case was called before the Port Louis district court on Monday morning. Sanjeev Kistopersad, who was arrested on Saturday 1 October, is accused of having set traps (nails and pieces of iron) on the Champ de Mars track. According to Safe City camera footage, the 32-year-old Tranquebar resident was on a motorbike in the vicinity of the Champ de Mars on Friday evening. He was charged provisionally with attempted animal torture at Bail and Remand Court on Sunday. This morning, the police did not object to his release on parole.
A second suspect, Jean Andy Samuel Domingue, was also arrested on Monday 3 October in connection with the case. This Tranquebar resident, like Sanjeev Kistopersad, has also been charged with attempted torture of animals. He remains in custody. He is a 22-year-old resident of Tranquebar.
A third suspect, another resident of Tranquebar, was also arrested last Tuesday for threatening the main witness in the case.
