Rodrigues: Pravind Jugnauth In The Island For The 20 Years Of Autonomy

The Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth is already in Rodrigues as part of the celebrations of 20 years of autonomy. The kick-off of the festivities program will be given on Tuesday in Port-Mathurin with the protocol part which will take place next Wednesday in the presence of the Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth, as guests of honor, the chief commissioner Johnson Roussety, the other commissioners and guests.

Today, afternoon, Pravind Jugnauth will proceed to the inauguration of a Green Space in Port Mathurin which will bear the name of the late Sir Anerood Jugnauth. This point will henceforth be known as Sir Anerood Jugnauth Square. This is a tribute to the former Prime Minister and ex-President of the Republic, known for being in the forefront in granting autonomous status to the island. Let us recall that Rodrigues got its autonomy on October 12, 2002 when the MSM-MMM alliance was in power at the time. Sir Anerood Jugnauth was Prime Minister, Paul Bérenger the No. 2 and Minister of Finance and Pravind Jugnauth was Minister of Agriculture.

This visit also marks the commemoration of 50 years of operation of Air Mauritius in Rodrigues.

Since last weekend, the celebrations have started, one can say that it is a party in Rodrigues. Last Sunday, more than 2000 people mobilized for the World Walking Day and the 20th anniversary of the autonomy. A march in the presence of the President of the Republic and his wife, the Chief Commissioner, Commissioners Varoc Ravina, Commissioner of Women Christianne, Commissioner of Health Nicolas Volbert and many men, women, youth and children, walked a distance of over 6 km. This mega march was organized under the theme ”a nou mars ensam for the progress of Autonomy”.

“This walk was a success,” said the Commissioner of Sports. “This activity was organized as part of the autonomy. It is one of the initiatives among others that have brought together the most families. An opinion moreover shared by the President of the Republic. “I am impressed by the number of participants. I hope that the Rodriguans will preserve this brotherhood,” said Pradeep Roopun.
