The Regional Assembly of Rodrigues met for a special session to debate two motions simultaneously. The motion of no confidence was put by the Minority Leader, Franchette Gaspard Pierre Louis and the motion of confidence was put by the majority member, Ludmis Allas.
At the very beginning of the session, Chairperson Louis Christian Leopold elaborated on comments that were broadcast on a private radio by the Deputy Chief Commissioner against him. Among other things, Franchette Gaspard Pierre Louis said that the Chairperson is a disgrace to the Republic of Mauritius when a letter on the motion of censure was published on Facebook. After the Chairperson read the remarks, it was the turn of the Chief Commissioner to read the same remarks and then asked the Chief Commissioner to refer the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions for investigation. The message, according to Christian Leopold, discredited his person and could constitute a contempt of the Assembly.
During this special session, which lasted 12 hours, the 8 members of the Opposition spoke, and the 9 members of the government spoke. At the end of the session after the summing up of Franchette Gaspard Pierre Louis and Johnson Roussety, the bell rang for two minutes, and the Clerk of the Assembly proceeded to the vote by quoting the names of each member where the members of the Assembly answered I and the Opposition answered NO. The score was 9-8 in favor of the government.
The speech of Deputy Chairperson Justar Ttolbize, deputy chairperson and representative of the Rodrigues Independentist Movement MIR, shocked many. He said that the MIR advocates for the total independence of Rodrigues and that he is not satisfied with the climate that prevails in this alliance. He said that the population of Rodrigues is suffering a lot and it is up to this government to work for justice, peace and democracy. For him, some supporters regretted having voted in favor of this alliance. He said that the MIR did not agree with the loan of MIC, the introduction of Rodrigues Public Utilities Corporation and the SAJ Square, but even the government is going ahead with these projects. He stated that “this alliance is doing the same as OPR arrogance dishonest. For the shortcomings and shortage of commodities, I blame the government and the Mauritius shipping corporation. We must correct the shot and make an autopsy of the state of the regional government.
