Rodrigues has reached 5699 cases on Sunday 13th February and has 341 new positive cases. With 1,656 patients considered cured, it is considered that the tenth district of Mauritius has 4,042 active people, or about 10% of the population of about 42,000 inhabitants.
The inhabitants as well as the political parties and the new Anti-Covid Citizen Movement, apart from the OPR, are very upset with the High-Powered Committee and the government of Mauritius who do not consider that it is high time to impose a general lock down in order to break the chain of transmission of the virus and to give hope to the Rodriguan population of an appeasement instead of an outbreak of cases of Covid 19 on the Island. They fear the appearance and circulation of new mutations of the virus. They also denounce that the High-Powered Committee is manipulating the figures in the daily report on the rate of contamination and the Covid 19 situation on the island. Many of them are already calling for a new postponement of the elections. If they have one assurance, it is that the majority of the population is doubly vaccinated and that the enthusiasm for the vaccine has not waned.
The new Anti-Covid Citizens’ Movement is calling on the government to impose a total lockdown of 10 to 15 days, to come up with economic and social measures such as the Government Wage Assistant Scheme (GWAS), mass testing, more staff in hospitals as well as ambulances and MISP care for people in self-isolation.
