Yesterday, Saturday 25 June, Linion Pep Morisien organised a rally to challenge the amendments to the Mauritius Broadcasting (Collection of License Fees) Act as well as to denounce acts of torture by the police. The rally started at about 2pm at Volcy Pougnet Street (formerly Madame Street) and ended at about 4.30pm. The aim was to take a stand against the tightening of penalties for non-payment of the TV licence fee, against cases of police brutality after the recent release of several videos and against the obligation to wear a mask in public.
“Stop Police Brutality” and “Rs 150 NO for partisan TV” were the slogans carried by the protesters. The organisers are happy with the turnout. Linion Pep Morisien (LPM) member Dev Sunassy thanked the participants for their support in the process. Activist Percy Yip Tong and Jayen Chellum, Secretary General of ACIM, were also present at the rally.
