Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth participated in the launch of the Infrastructure for Resilient Island States (IRIS) by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Tuesday, November 2, 2021.
The launch of IRIS takes place on the sidelines of the United Nations international climate conference, COP26, in Glasgow, Scotland.
It is a joint initiative of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to promote resilient, sustainable and inclusive infrastructure development.
In his message, the Prime Minister recalled the massive investment of around Rs 11.7 billion by the government in the National Flood Management Programme.
He reiterated his call for access to international financing to enable countries to build resilience to the devastating effects of climate change.
The Prime Minister welcomed the innovative IRIS mechanism. Coupled with a climate finance approach more suited to countries most exposed to the consequences of global warming, such as Mauritius, IRIS will enable SIDS to better mitigate their vulnerability to natural disasters and enhance their resilience.
