Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth addressed the high-level panel on strengthening health systems in Africa through public-private sector collaboration.
The Head of Government of Mauritius was welcomed on his arrival by Mrs. Florizelle Liser, President and CEO of CORPORATE COUNCIL ON AFRICA. It was an opportunity for the Prime Minister to highlight the progress made by Mauritius in the medical sector in front of an audience of professionals of the sector and potential investors.
Mr. Pravind Jugnauth pointed out that in Mauritius 70% of the population turns to the public sector for medical needs but that the Health Sector Strategic Plan 2020-2024 has established the basis for more collaboration between the public and private sector in this sector.
“Mauritius is promoting a new approach to generate value-added medical activities such as advanced medicine, medical tourism, medical training as well as the emergence of a pharmaceutical industry,” said the Prime Minister.
Mr. Pravind Jugnauth also recalled that the need for more collaboration between the private and public sectors in the medical field remains a necessity in order to achieve the sustainable development goals established by the United Nations and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
The Prime Minister added that governments have a duty to ensure that values such as equity, solidarity and justice are respected, hence the need to move forward with regulatory frameworks that address pricing, service quality, accountability and alignment of private activities with national priorities.
