The Prime Minister, Mr. Pravind Jugnauth, participated this Wednesday, September 22, 2022, in the Association of Small Island States (AOSIS) Leaders’ Breakfast. This meeting was held in New York on the sidelines of the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations.
The working session was chaired by the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Mr. Gaston Browne. Discussions focused on the development of a Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI) that responds to the specificities of small island states members of AOSIS.
This index should facilitate actions to address emerging challenges faced by small island states, such as the effects of climate change or health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic.
A high-level committee, co-chaired by the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda and the Prime Minister of Norway, Erna Solberg, has been working on a number of recommendations to this effect.
An interim report was submitted to AOSIS member countries in August of this year. This report was discussed at the Leaders’ Breakfast and a final document is expected by the end of the year.
During this AOSIS working session, the Prime Minister had the opportunity to meet with the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Ms. Jacinda Ardern, the President of Suriname, Mr. Chandrika Parasad Santokhi and the Foreign Minister of Singapore, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan.
