Seventy-five deaths on our roads since the beginning of this year. Louis Roland Babet, 65 years old, was unfortunately added to this list on the evening of Thursday September 22. This resident of La Caverne, Vacoas was mowed down on his bicycle by an oncoming 4 x4 that was overtaking a parked car on the road to La Marie, Vacoas. The 60-year-old was killed on the spot. The autopsy performed this morning, Friday, September 23 at the Victoria Hospital, Candos attributed his death to multiple injuries.
It was around 9:20 pm that this accident occurred. Roland Babet was riding a bicycle on the road to La Marie, Vacoas in the direction of La Caverne. A 4 x 4 of the brand Mazda of black color which ran at high speed and overtook a parked car on the left side of this road. It was at this precise moment that it mowed down Roland Babet brutally and dragged him for several meters before stopping.
The driver of this 4×4, a young man of 27 years old, works at the Technosand company and lives on route La Brasserie, La Marie, Vacoas. An ambulance from the Emergency Medical Service (Samu) was sent to the scene of the accident. The doctor on board could only note the death of the 60-year-old.
The body of Roland Babet was transported to the morgue of the Brown Sequard Hospital in Beau-Bassin. It was then transferred to the Victoria Hospital morgue to be autopsied this morning, Friday, September 23, by Dr. Sheila Jankee-Parsad, Principal Police Medical Officer. She attributed the death to multiple injuries.
The driver of the SUV was taken to the Vacoas Police Station where he was subjected to a breathalyzer test. The test was negative. He was then placed in a cell at the detention center of Vacoas. This Friday morning, September 23, he was brought before the court of Curepipe on a provisional charge of manslaughter.
