Pravind Kumar Jugnauth will be visiting Agalega on Thursday 29 February. He will be accompanied by a Mauritian and an Indian delegation. This visit to Agalega is being made in the context of the official inauguration ceremony for new infrastructures in Agalega. This event will be marked by an online address by the Indian Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi.
The development projects in Agalega are the result of an agreement signed between Mauritius and India. The island has now a new runway, a quay and other facilities built by AFCONS Ltd and financed by India.
The aim is to promote, protect and guarantee security in the Indian Ocean region. In other words, increased surveillance and monitoring of our exclusive economic zone… the fight against piracy, drug trafficking… the control of illegal fishing.
Prime Minister Jugnauth and his counterpart from India, Narendra Modi, are gearing up for a landmark event aimed at strengthening their countries’ bilateral relations. Scheduled for Thursday at 3 pm via video-conferencing, the leaders will inaugurate an airstrip and a jetty at Agalega Island, along with six community development projects. This initiative not only marks a significant milestone in the India-Mauritius development partnership but also aims to enhance connectivity, improve maritime security, and promote socio-economic development in the region. This collaboration is a testament to the mutual commitment of both nations to ensuring regional stability and security, further demonstrating India’s role as a key strategic partner in the Indian Ocean.
