She ran out of a yard to cross the Nouvelle France Road on Monday evening, September 12. Fatinah Dhunneea, 57, was hit head-on. She landed on the windscreen of this car before being thrown onto the asphalt. The autopsy performed on Tuesday morning, 13 September, attributed her death to multiple injuries. To date, the number of deaths on our roads has reached sixty-eight.
The accident occurred at around 8.10pm on Monday evening, 12 September. The driver of the car went to the police station in Nouvelle France to report it. In his statement, he explained that he was driving along Link Road, Nouvelle France, coming from Savanne Road towards the Nouvelle France roundabout. His vehicle, which was travelling at a speed of fifty-seven, kilometres per hour, had arrived at the Mahatma Gandhi SSS.
Suddenly, the 41-year-old local driver said he saw a woman dressed all in black running out of a courtyard on the right to cross in front of his car. At that very moment, he was two metres away from this person. He said he applied his brakes, but unfortunately he could not avoid her. He hit the victim, who landed on his windscreen and was thrown a few metres away.
After the impact, all the airbags in his car went off and he was trapped behind the wheel for a good 15 minutes. He was extricated from his vehicle by volunteers. As he got out, he saw a woman lying on the road, and police officers and Emergency Medical Service personnel were already there. Unfortunately, the EMT doctor could only observe the death of the woman.
The driver of the car was taken to the Nouvelle France police station for a breath test. The test was negative. After questioning, he was taken into custody at the Bel Ombre police station. On Tuesday morning, 13 September, he was brought before the court in Mahebourg. He is facing a provisional charge of manslaughter.
