As of 15 July, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport will welcome tourists again after being closed for more than a year following the Covid 19 health crisis. Hoteliers and all jobs that may or may not have a direct link with the tourism industry are delighted. However, the airline companies which serve Mauritius are uncertain.
The United Kingdom has already extended the opening of its borders, so it is likely that British Airways planes will not be able to serve the Mauritian destination.
Of course, Emirates Airlines is already present in Mauritius with one flight per week to Dubai. Other international companies will also have to follow in Emirates Airlines’ footsteps. However, everything will depend on the number of passengers who want to come to Mauritius and the number of countries that will open their borders. Spain and France have already opened their borders this month to travellers which are vaccinated against Covid 19. Other European countries will have to gradually adopt the same method.
Initially, Air Mauritius, still under voluntary administration, will have to provide flights to several destinations in Europe, Asia or Australia. Again, everything will depend on the number of reservations and whether the operations will be profitable or not.
