At the MSM press conference held this Saturday, February 3, 2024, the main topics were cyclonic phenomena, climate change and the measures taken by the government to deal with recent extreme weather events. The Minister of Financial Services and Good Governance, Mahen Seeruttun, emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the populations affected by Cyclone Belal, including allocating one billion rupees for relief efforts and providing financial assistance to affected sectors such as fishing and agriculture. He also mentioned that the Financial Services Commission would be reimbursing owners of vehicles damaged by the floods. In fact, 180 owners whose vehicles were damaged by cyclone Belal have already been compensated.
The Minister of Financial Services stated that over Rs 80 million had already been disbursed to date.
A total of 700 cases have been reported to the Financial Services Commission (FSC). Minister Seeruttun also spoke of the various measures taken by the government to help victims.
Sandra Mayotte, Member of Parliament for constituency no. 14, who also hosted the meeting, stressed the importance of adapting to extreme weather conditions, especially after the heavy rains recorded in her region. She highlighted the need to rethink urban and rural development planning to cope with the effects of climate change, including the protection of beaches against erosion. Sandra Mayotte also stressed that the responsibility for meeting these challenges lies not just with the government, but with every citizen and institution.
The press conference also addressed the commemoration of the 189th anniversary of the abolition of slavery, considered a successful event thanks to the participation and activities organized.
