The Montebello Smart City Project was presented, Wednesday, during an official ceremony held on the project site in Montebello. The first phase of the project, which kick-started on 01 July 2021 and for which some Rs 900 million have been earmarked by the promoters, will mainly house commercial buildings. A site visit was also organised prior to the official presentation of the project.
The Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Dr Renganaden Padayachy, the Chief Executive Officer of MaxCity Group, Mr Danny Fon Sing, and other eminent personalities were present for the site visit and official project presentation.
In his address, Minister Padayachy highlighted that this Smart City, ideally located between the two economic poles of the country, Port-Louis and Ebene, is a sign of the country’s economic recovery. The Montebello Smart City, he pointed out, is a concrete example of the alignment between private sector operators and Government’s vision and strategy for economic and social development.
The Smart City, underscored the Finance Minister, is also in line with three of the main themes of Budget 2021-22, namely: investment recovery; growth of the construction sector; and development of modern and integrated infrastructures. He also observed that the Montebello Smart City perfectly illustrates the public-private partnership.
As for Mr Fon Sing, he emphasised that the Montebello Smart City will be a new unique place to live as it has been inspired by nature. He informed that, upon its completion, the smart city will stretch over some 120 arpents, generate some 6,500 jobs and comprise commercial and office spaces, residential buildings, as well as a nature walk of about 1,5 kilometres along the St Louis river, among others.
Moreover, he remarked that the site is strategically located, between Port Louis and Ebene, and is easily accessible. Infrastructure works are expected to be completed in 2023, he added.
