The provisional charge of conspiracy to commit theft against Sandip Moneea was struck out this morning in the Mapou Court. Senior State Counsel Manjula Boojharut informed the Mapou court this morning that the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has no objection to the striking of the provisional charge of “conspiracy to do an unlawful act” against Sandeep Mooneea. This motion was granted by Magistrate Nader Ali Caunhye. The former valet of the ex-Hotel Legends was suspected of having participated in the theft of a magnetic card in 2011. He had also been prosecuted at the Assizes for the murder of Michaela Harte along with Avinash Treebhowon. Both were found not guilty. He was arrested on April 19 when the police investigation was reopened. The provisional charge against him was therefore dropped.
It is to be reminded that the body of Irish teacher Michaella Harte-McAreavey was discovered in the bathtub of her hotel room on January 10, 2011. She was on her honeymoon with her husband John McAreavey. In August 2020, the Central Criminal Investigation Department reopened the investigation into this murder that had never been solved.
