Facebook and Instagram, which are owned by Meta, returned to service on Tuesday following a more than two-hour outage that affected hundreds of thousands of users worldwide due to a technical problem.
Around 10 a.m. ET (1900 MUT), there were disturbances. Many users reported on competitor social networking platform X that they were unable to join in to Facebook and Instagram after being thrown off.
According to a spokesman, the White House National Security Council was keeping an eye on the situation and was not yet aware of any specific harmful cyber activity.
Over 550,000 Facebook users and roughly 92,000 Instagram users reported difficulties during the peak of the outage, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.com. A technical problem earlier today made it impossible for certain users to access some of our services. Without going into any detail, Meta spokesman Andy Stone stated in a post on X, “We resolved the issue… for everyone who was impacted.”
Meta’s shares were down 1.2% in afternoon trading.The company’s family of apps, which also includes Threads and WhatsApp, has over 3.19 billion daily active users.
The application programming interface for WhatsApp Business was also having problems, according to its previous status dashboard.
