Manchester United were knocked out of the League Cup in their Round of 16 opener on Wednesday, losing at home to West Ham (0-1), who exacted revenge four days after their Premier League defeat.
Report and highlights: David Moyes tasted victory for the first time against Manchester United since he was sacked in 2014; Manuel Lanzini scored the game-winning goal early on.
West Ham eliminated Manchester United in the third round of the Carabao Cup with an early goal from Manuel Lanzini, which was enough for a 1-0 win.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team has been beaten in the semifinals in the last two editions and were coming into this game off a thrilling 2-1 Premier League win at the London Stadium in Sunday’s match.
But three days later, it was David Moyes’ men who celebrated Lanzini’s victory, which gave West Ham a rare triumph at Old Trafford and a place in the Carabao Cup as the hosts failed to turn 27 shots into goals.
The Hammers had failed to win in their previous 17 trips to Old Trafford, with Carlos Tevez the last player to score a goal there in May 2007.
This time it was his Argentinian compatriot Lanzini who did the damage, scoring after Ryan Fredericks had beaten a rusty Alex Telles on a night when both teams made 21 changes.
West Ham will face Manchester City in the round of 16.
As for the other clubs in the capital, Chelsea, against Aston Villa, and Tottenham, at Wolverhampton, needed penalties to go through. Timo Werner opened the score for the Blues shortly after the break (54th), but Cameron Archer equalized 10 minutes later. In the final session, Ashley Young hit the bar and Marvelous Nakamba missed a save from Kepa, allowing Reece James to convert the decisive fifth shot into the top corner (4-3 a.e.t.) and send his team into the last eight against Southampton at Stamford Bridge.
Spurs, for their part, thought they had done the hard part with goals from Tanguy Ndomblé (1-0, 14th) and Harry Kane (2-0, 23rd). But the Wolves came out with Leander Dendoncker (2-1, 38th) and Daniel Podence (2-2, 58th) to take the penalty shootout. With three failed attempts, the team from the West Midlands had to give up (3-2 on penalties) to concentrate on a championship where they are not at their best, while Tottenham will go to Burnley in the next round.
Arsenal, on the other hand, had no trouble defeating AFC Wimbledon (D3) at home (3-0), with Alexandre Lacazette scoring from the penalty spot. In the round of 16, they will host Leeds, while Liverpool will make the short trip to Preston North End (D2).
