Joe Lesjongard: The Government Faces Two Crises: COVID And The Ukraine/Russia Conflict

Must Read

Joe Lesjongard, during a press conference in the presence of MP Kavi Doolub and the Minister of Gender Equality, Kalpana Konjoo-Shah, commented on current events. Now, it is the conflict between Ukraine and Russia that comes to create another difficult situation, pointed out Joe Lesjongard. In these difficult times, solidarity is extremely important. In fact, in cases where the government can provide relief to the people, we will do so. But sometimes it is beyond our control, as is the case with diesel and gasoline, he added,

Commenting on the price of oil that is being debated, the MP for Constituency No. 14 explained that in September 2021, the price of a barrel of oil was 74 dollars. In March 2022, it rose to 116 dollars a barrel, that is, an increase of 42 dollars in the space of six months.

Thus, the government had to review the price of gasoline and diesel. “The government is sensitive to situations that will impact the budgets of Mauritian families. In the most difficult times, we have supported all social strata of our population as best we could, especially those at the bottom of the ladder. But in the case of oil, it was inevitable.”

Moreover, if this conflict persists, there will be impacts on oil and gas supplies.

Taking the opportunity, Joe Lesjongard recalled that the STC has launched an international tender for the import of cement and milk powder.

During this press conference, the President of the MSM commented on the elections in Rodrigues. “I salute the people of Rodrigues. Whether it is for the COVID, the regional campaign and the day of the elections, everything went well. The people voted in peace.”

“Zot p fer bouffon are post leader of the Opposition”

Addressing the political side in Mauritius, Joe Lesjongard had this to say “the on and off cinema between the PTR and MMM is still going on. The saga of 2014 continues. Last time, the people got fed up with their discussion and the same scenario will be repeated.”

Kavi Doolub, “Let’s be an example to the world.”

For his part, Kavi Doolub spoke about the Maha Shivaratri festival. He praised the fact that everyone respected the health rules. The pilgrims, he said, showed sacrifice and discipline and the celebrations went well.

Kalpana Konjoo-Shah “This government has always listened to women

For her part, the Minister of Women’s Affairs, Kalpana Konjoo-Shah reported on the International Women’s Day to be celebrated on March 8. “This is a very important date for my ministry, it is a historic day. Every year, this holiday is celebrated in a big way, to celebrate and honor women. And, for us, it is a priority. However, this year it will be different because of COVID.”

She then explained that only 50 people will be invited to Sir Harilall Vaghjee Hall, while adhering to health guidelines. It will be an official ceremony starting at 10 am and the Prime Minister will be the guest of honor. MBC and several other platforms will relay the event live.

“I call on women to get online. This is your day.”

Asked about the pension payment that will be made on March 7, the Minister of Public Utilities says he understands the situation of the pensioners. “We are sensitive to the issue and I am sure that the concerned Minister will bring corrective measures.”
