Jamaican authorities have seized an estimated $80 million worth of cocaine from a cargo ship at the port of Kingston in the country’s biggest drug busts, according to the authorities.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force, on Saturday, stated that the Jamaican officials found the drugs hidden in a cargo ship which came from South America and valued it at $80 million.
The officials found an additional 1,500 kilograms (3,306 lbs) of cocaine on the cargo ship. The shipment was put into 50 bags containing 1,250 packets of cocaine, the Jamaica Defence Force said in a statement.
Transnational criminal organizations have made Jamaica as the center for transferring weapons and drugs, including shipping cocaine to North America and Europe.
Jamaica’s Defense Forces stated that it would continue to battle criminals seeking to “take advantage of Jamaica’s geo-strategic significance in world trade by exploring legitimate cargo.”
The name of the ship containing the cocaine has not been mentioned by the police nor the defence force. No one has been arrested in the case.
Global criminal police agency, Interpol, said the Jamaican authorities made a record in October of busting 500 kilograms of cocaine worth $25 million, expected to be shipped on a private jet bound to Canada.
