An Air Austral plane, a Boeing 777-300ER, and an Air Mauritius aircraft, an A350-900, both with passengers, were involved in an in-flight incident on January 3 at around 3,000 meters above the southern region of Mauritius. The two captains were alerted by their Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), which provides a warning when two aircraft are in danger of colliding. The Air Austral pilot then diverted his aircraft from its trajectory to avoid any risk, without the passengers even realizing the potential danger, while the A350-900 was able to continue its descent without any problem. An investigation has been launched by the civil aviation authority. The aim is to establish the responsibilities and also take appropriate measures to avoid this incident to happen again. Air Austral and Air Mauritius have launched separate internal investigations.
