According to the latest report of Statistics Mauritius, inflation rate has increased to 11.50 % in August from 11 % in July 2022. On a Year-on-Year (Y-o-Y) basis, inflation has worked out to 11.5% in August 2022 as compared to 6.0% in August 2021. Inflation for the 12-months ending August 2022 has worked out to 8.8% as compared to 3.0% for the 12-months ending August 2021.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.4 point or 0.3% from 124.0 in July 2022 to 124.4 in August 2022. In Mauritius, the main components of the Consumer Price Index are: Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (24.8 % of the total weight); Transport (14.7 %); Housing, Water, Electricity and Other Fuels (11.2 %) and Alcoholic Beverages & Tobacco (11 %). Others include Furniture and Household Equipment (5.9 %); Restaurants & Hotels (5.4 %); Miscellaneous Goods & Services (5.0 %); Education (5 %); Clothing & Footwear (4.6 %); Communication (4.4 %); Recreation & Culture (4.2 %) and Health (3.8 %).
CORE2 inflation has worked out to 8.3% in August 2022 as compared to 4.3% in August 2021. CORE2 excludes food, beverages and tobacco, mortgage interests on housing loan, electricity, gas, other fuels and items whose prices are controlled from headline inflation.
