Indian Ambassador Abhay Kumar on Monday called on Madagascar President Andry Rajoelina and discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral ties. “Ambassador Abhay Kumar called on Andry Rajoelina, President of the Republic of Madagascar today. They noted the progress made in the bilateral ties between India and Madagascar and discussed ways to further strengthen them.”
Last month, Indian Ambassador Abhay Kumar met Madagascar Prime Minister Christian Ntsay in the capital Antananarivo and discussed the progress made in bilateral relations between the two countries following President Ram Nath Kovind’s visit to Madagascar in 2018. Madagascar is seen as not only a vital bilateral partner but also as a pivotal element of the SAGAR collaborative maritime strategy. There are several MoUs in the areas of health, education, culture, training of Human Resources, environmental protection, customs, and information exchange between the two countries that have been finalized and are likely to be launched soon. In March this year, an India-Madagascar Chamber of Commerce was established in Antananarivo to further strengthen trade links between the two countries.
India has maintained maritime links with Madagascar for several centuries. Indian merchants have been established in Madagascar since the end of the 18th century. The end of the 19th century and the first years of the 20th century saw a steady increase in the number of people from India in Madagascar.
