A lay-by, funded to the tune of Rs 2.8 million, was inaugurated this morning by the Minister of Land Transport and Light Rail, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Alan Ganoo, at the Notre Dame du Mont Carmel RCA school, in Chemin Grenier.
In his address, Minister Ganoo recalled that the Notre Dame du Mont Carmel RCA school is located between two road bends thereby severely affecting the safe visibility of drivers and creating a road safety problem near the educational institution. School buses and other vehicles that were alighting or boarding passengers and school children faced much difficulty in doing so and caused traffic jam in the vicinity, he pointed out.
Mr Ganoo further recalled that a request was made by the school authorities to the Ministry of Land Transport and Light Rail to address the issue. After analysing the urgency of the matter as regards children’s safety, initiatives were taken for the construction of a lay-by in front of the school so as to improve road safety and the safety of children attending the Notre Dame du Mont Carmel RCA school, he stressed.
The lay-by, the Minister underlined, will now be able to cater for the vehicles and passengers to stop by the school safely thereby not hindering the smooth running of the traffic in the region.
The project was undertaken by Transinvest Construction Ltd since February 2022 and was completed in May 2022. It comprises a footpath, drains, retaining walls and ramps.
