Outrage in the Palmerston, Phoenix area after an 87-year-old woman was sexually assaulted. The perpetrator was none other than her daughter’s brother-in-law, who lived in the same yard. The 51-year-old has been actively sought since Tuesday afternoon. The octogenarian was admitted to the Victoria Hospital, Candos, where she is under observation.
“Mo bofrer ine koz ek mwa, linn dir mwa eskiz li pa fer sa enkor,” the victim’s daughter confided in a statement to Le Matinal on the evening of Tuesday 12 October. The 50-year-old woman would never have thought that her brother-in-law could have done such a thing. Moreover, she said, “li finn dimann eskiz divan mo mama”.
A statement was taken at the Phoenix police station regarding the sexual assault of the octogenarian. She explained that her mother lives with her and she is the only one who takes care of her. In addition to her age, the octogenarian suffers from illnesses and has difficulty expressing herself properly.
On Tuesday morning, 12 October, around 6.45 am, while giving her a bath, her mother complained of pain in her private parts. The fifty-year-old was shocked when her mother confided in her, following her questions, that it was her brother-in-law who had sexually abused her. It was on Monday morning at around 11am. She was alone in her room upstairs in the house when the suspect arrived.
When confronted with this accusation the brother-in-law, Steeve Makoon did not deny the charge and had to declare, “eskiz mwa seki monne mwa seki monn fer”. Immediately afterwards he left the house and has not been seen since. The main suspect in the rape was taken into custody at the Curepipe police station late on Tuesday evening, 12 October.
He was subsequently taken to the scene of the crime, along with Scene of Crime Office (SOCO) officers and investigators, on Wednesday morning for a re-enactment exercise at Palmerstone Residence, Phoenix. On Monday morning, on her way back from a shop, her mother told her about this heavy reality. However, she said she didn’t take it seriously because there was no mess or blood evidence.
