The Gatekeeper who will try to maintain his invincibility in the main event of this Saturday at the Champ-de-mars racecourse. He won twice against 4 years horses, and he will face stronger opposition in The Winter Stakes (1850m – G3).
The Gatekeeper won the last two rounds of the 4-years old championship. His last victory was 1850m when he easily beat Absolutist and Nourbese. The Rameshwar Gujadhur-trained horse will be competing against older horses for the first time in Mauritius.
The Gatekeeper has done very well in training, and he is in better physical condition. South African jockey Chase Maujean knows him very well and this duo will be hard to beat.
His main opponent will be Royal Wulff. He is an extremely regular horse who has won five times and who has always finish in the money during his career, whether in Mauritius or South Africa. He run for the first time over 1850m. He did very well in the Barbé Cup by taking second place behind Frosted Gold over 1600m. He will be right there at the finish.
Padre Pio is in a better shape this year. He won after a difficult race on the outside on his last outing. Padre Pio is a classy sort who will be suited by the 1850m. He can try to win from pillar to post, and his opponents will have to finish very strong to catch him.
Nourbese has been hampered in his last two outings. He could have finish closer to The Gatekeeper over 1850m the last time, but the gap closed in front of him in the final straight. Nourbese was impressive during his last gallops. He will be a good outsider.

Horse Gimmetherain, number 1 of Race 3 for Race Meeting 16 on Saturday 20 August 2022, has been scratched at 8.00 am this Friday 19 August 2022 by the Racing Stewards of the Horse Racing Division, acting on veterinary advice. Gimmetherain has a swollen left fore fetlock. As per the rules for fixed odds betting, all monies placed on Gimmetherain are cancelled and refunded, and betting is to be reopened. For the tote, the bets on Gimmetherain will be refunded after the official results for Race 3 on Saturday 20 August 2022, except for all other types of bets where it is stipulated that it is replaced by the Tote favourite.
