The first classic race of the season, the Anjalay Coopen Cup (1400m – G2) which replaces the traditional The Duchess Of York Cup, will be held this Saturday. This event will be reserved for new horses, and it is Captain Lannister who stands out. He will face the three horses trained by Samraj Mahadia.
He will have a tough task. The Shirish Narang-trained horse will be alone against the Mahadia trio. Captain Lannister won three races in South Africa and he also finished in the money in two Group 1 races. He raced up front in the WSB SA Classic (1800m – G1), and he was caught late by two excellent couriers, Red Saxon and Safe Passage. Captain Lannister is a classy sort who has improved a lot in recent weeks in training. He can try to win from pillar to post.
Of the three horses of trainer Samraj Mahadia, it was Xavion who left the best impression in training. He is a good finisher who won in a Listed race on his last outing in South Africa. He will try to follow closely before finishing strongly.
Super Excited, who trained with Xavion, will also to be feared. He is a very consistent sort with three wins and six places. Super Excited has placed in Group 1, 2 and 3 races and he has evolved alongside the best horses in South Africa. He has the quality to win in this field.
Gaudis Masterpiece seems to be the weaker of the field on his South-African form. He has a very good finish, but he has not raced against the best horses. He is well bred, and he can still blossom. He can upset the odds.
