A technician who runs a photocopying service in Vallée-Pitot, reported a case of theft of 14 checks in a booklet at his home. He learned that 9 checks were presented to a bank in December of last year and that an amount of Rs 455,000 was paid. The 26-year-old technician said he suspects an electrician who came to his house for work in mid-November or early December.
The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of the Metropolitan Division North has been seized with this investigation. It was on the evening of Thursday, January 19, that the photocopy technician went to the Pitot Valley Police Station to report the theft of 14 checks from a booklet in his living room. This man was made aware of this theft when a bank employee informed him that an individual came to this bank to cash a check that he issued in the amount of Rs 95,000 around 2:25 pm on Thursday, January 19. He asked this bank employee to cancel this payment and to detain the person until he arrives on the spot.
But when he arrived at the bank at 2:36 pm, the individual had already left. The check was returned to him to make a statement to the police. Upon returning home, he proceeded to check his checkbook and it was with great surprise that he found fourteen checks missing.
He immediately went to the branch of his bank to inquire and there he was informed by the manager and other officers that a payment of Rs 455,000 was made on the presentation of 9 checks that he issued since the month of December 2022 and January 2023. He had to inform them then that he never authorized these payments, as these checks were stolen from his home.
He made a request to retrieve these stolen checks, and the bank informed him that they would be returned to him after their internal investigation was completed. This victim told police investigators that he can identify the electrician who came to do electrical work at his home.
