The Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection has promulgated the Consumer Protection (Maximum Price of Essential Goods) (Amendment) Regulations 2021. Thus, the prices of several consumer food products have been set.
This follows Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth’s announcement that the government would disburse Rs 500 million to subsidize certain products.
To curb the soaring inflation, the government has fixed the prices of several food products, including basic commodities such as rice, flour, sugar, milk, cooking oils.
The prices set by the government should help consumers and prevent repeated price increases for some products. These measures are part of the government’s efforts to curb inflation.
The Ministry of Internal Trade must ensure that retailers play the game and respect the maximum price set.
