Global Innovation Index (GII) takes the pulse of the world’s most recent innovation performance of 131 economies on a yearly basis.
The 2021 edition published 6 days ago shows although Mauritius has maintained its rank, it has performed worse than in 2020 in a number of areas especially in Knowledge and Technology Outputs (93rd in 2021 compared to 79th in 2020). The GII Index 2021 reveals that Knowledge Impact remains relatively low, especially in manufacturing.
Mauritius performed best in the Institutions category (21st), ranking below 30 in a political environment (30th), regulatory environment (24th) and 21st in a business environment.
GII has become one of the leading references for measuring an economy’s innovation performance. The GII consists of seven pillars, five of which are classified as inputs and the remaining two as outputs.
The performance of Mauritius the Business Sophistication and Knowledge and Technology Outputs are worrying as it shows that despite the contribution of the strong IT and Financial Services contribution in our economy, both accounting for 20% of GDP in 2020, high-tech imports as a percentage of GDP and University-Industry Research and Development remain low compared to the rest of the world.
Mauritius also lags behind in terms of labour productivity and percentage of high-tech manufacturing.
These results confirm the downward trend in labour (-14.5%) and capital productivity (-17.4%) captured by the Productivity and Competitiveness Indicators of Mauritius in the Export Oriented Enterprises in 2020.
