The Child Development Unit (CDU) of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Welfare took in four children aged between one and a half and six years old before placing them in a shelter, after obtaining an Emergency Protection Order (EPO) from a court. These children, including three brothers and a sister, were left to fend for themselves in deplorable hygienic conditions in their home in Vuillemin, Quartier-Militaire.
It was following complaints of abuse that a Family Welfare Officer from the Ministry of Gender Equality arrived at the family’s home for a visit, which proved to be the most shocking.
Their faces were filled with mucus. The one-and-a-half-year-old baby looked like he hadn’t been bathed for days. One of the children had an injury to his right foot, which was not treated. They were all taken to Dr. Bruno Cheong Hospital in Flacq where they were admitted for treatment.
This Family Welfare Officer gave a statement to this effect at the police station of Quartier-Militaire in the afternoon of Tuesday, July 19. The Family Welfare Brigade was seized of this case.
