All opposition parliamentarians demonstrated peacefully outside Parliament on Friday. The aim: to protest the way in which the Speaker conducts parliamentary business, but also against the provisions of the Financial Crimes Commission Bill. Xavier-Luc Duval described it as “an extremely sad and serious day for the country”. For him, it is important for the nation to understand what is happening in Parliament. He announced that the opposition would intensify its actions against the Speaker next year.
Paul Bérenger, for his part, was even more virulent. “This Speaker is a thug, a scoundrel… a disgrace”, he declared. Patrick Assirvaden, for his part, declared that the population had realized that the National Assembly had hit rock bottom. Finally, Nando Bodha was delighted that all the opposition MPs had joined forces to protest the Speaker. For him, the Financial Crimes Commission Bill is “the final nail in the coffin of democracy”.
Linion Moris : night vigil in front of State House
Linion Moris staged a peaceful protest this Friday, just 30 minutes before the start of parliamentary proceedings. The leaders spoke out against the Financial Crimes Commission Bill, which will continue to be debated this Friday. Neena Ramdenee announced that at around 8.30pm this evening, members of Linion Moris will hold a night vigil near the State House. “We want to put pressure on the President of the Republic not to sign the law. We hope he won’t,” she declared. As for Nando Bodha, he denounced the powers the future Financial Crimes Commission will have. “This is a law where measures, facilities and powers, normally used, when state security is at stake, are going to be used against citizens. This emanates from an undemocratic regime”, he declared.
