Mahen Seeruttun and Fazilah Jeewa-Daureeawoo held a press conference at the Sun Trust building yesterday. Financial Services Minister Mahen Seeruttun announced the introduction of the Financial Crime Commission Bill in Parliament. According to Seeruttun, Pravind Jugnauth and his government are not skimping on the means to fight fraud and corruption in the country. This bill will completely overhaul the entire ecosystem for combating financial crime, and is in fact one of the recommendations of the Commission of Inquiry into Drug Trafficking chaired by former judge Paul Lam Shang Leen. Minister Mahen Seeruttun explained that the main aim of the new Commission will be to prosecute criminals, but also to educate the general public.
The Minister of Financial Services argues that the financial world has evolved, even though all institutions have functioned, and new technologies are forcing the government to review the way investigations are conducted. “A draft of the new law is ready and consultations with the various stakeholders have begun”, announces Minister Seeruttun.
For her part, Social Security Minister Fazilah Jeewa-Daureeawoo focused on the social side of government. Fazilah Jeewa-Daureeawoo also explained that the MSM government and Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth are working for the well-being of society as a whole.
