Jayraz Kissoondoyal, 53 years old, also known as Shyam Italien, did not survive his injuries during a fight near a shop in Bois d’Oiseaux, Poudre d’Or on the evening of Friday 21 April. The man, a resident of this locality, died on the morning of Thursday 4 May in a ward of the intensive care unit of the northern hospital where he was in critical condition. The autopsy performed the same day attributed his death to an intracranial hemorrhage.
The 50-year-old, who had facial injuries, was found unconscious and reeking of alcohol on the roadside in Bois d’Oiseau, Poudre d’Or on the evening of Friday 21 April. He was taken to the North Hospital in a police vehicle.
The Poudre d’Or police station received a request at about 10.17pm on Friday evening, 21 April, for an individual who was lying unconscious on the roadside opposite a shop. He had injuries to his face and reeked of alcohol. A knife was found near his body.
Two men were at the scene, one aged 38 and a 31-year-old barachois worker. They both live in the village. They had told these police officers that they were assaulted by the man, whom they knew by the nickname of Italian Shyam. Both men had injuries on their bodies. They later went to the Poudre d’Or police station to get a Form 58 before going to the hospital for treatment.
The knife measuring 25 cm that was found at the scene of the attack was seized as evidence. Footage from a Safe City CCTV camera had been viewed. A group of people had been seen arguing near a shop.
Jayraz Kissoondoyal breathed his last at 6.45am on Thursday 4 May. The autopsy was performed the same day at the morgue of the Dr. A.G. Jeetoo Hospital, Port Louis, by Dr. Prem Chamane, Principal Police Medical Officer, who attributed his death to intracranial hemorrhage.
The Criminal Investigation Division of St. Pierre is investigating the case.
