A 38-year-old Ukrainian woman was arrested on Wednesday morning of May 10. This for driving her car and abandoning it on the metro rail in Curepipe in the early hours of Wednesday morning May 10. At 10 a.m. she tested positive for alcohol. She had sixteen micrograms of alcohol in her breath. She is provisionally charged with endangering the safety of subway passengers under Section 1,2 and 41 of the Light Rail Act 1019, Act 17/19. After her appearance in the Curepipe court, she was released on a bail of Rs 10,000 and an IOU of Rs 20,000.
It was around 2:30 am on Thursday, May 10, that a team of police officers led by Sergeant Moolee went to a request for an accident on the metro rail in Curepipe. A car of the brand Hyundai Creta of white color was abandoned there at sixty-four meters from the junction of D’Epinay and Meldrum streets, heading towards the central station of the metro in Curepipe.
The car was unoccupied and unlocked. A remote key was inside. No damage was found on the vehicle, however an oil leak was found on the metro rail. An inspection was made by a Metro Express Ltd (MEL) technician who found no damage. The car was removed from the rail by a MEL heavy-duty vehicle.
At 10 o’clock on Wednesday morning, May 10, the driver of the car, a Ukrainian national, self-employed and living in the village of Roches Noires was arrested. She was submitted to a breathalyzer test by a police officer of the Emergency Response Service. The test was positive. She had sixteen micrograms of alcohol in her breath. This accident occurred not far from the place where Henashna Beeharry-Ramtohul, 30 years old, resident of Castel was killed by a streetcar on Saturday, May 6, while trying to cross the rail of the metro.
The Ukrainian citizen will have to appear in court in Curepipe again on Wednesday, November 8.
