The first death involved a 57-year-old woman, who suffered from comorbidities and died in a private clinic. A few days later, a 58-year-old man died in hospital after being admitted with a dengue infection.
These two new deaths illustrate the seriousness of the situation. The Ministry of Health has published figures indicating that there are currently 297 active cases in Mauritius and 125 in Rodrigues. Since December 11, 2023, Mauritius has recorded 5,027 cases of dengue fever and Rodrigues 2,166.
Certain regions of Mauritius are experiencing a higher incidence of dengue fever. The most affected areas are Goodlands, Cottage, Grand-Gaube and the outskirts of the capital. The health authorities recommend vigilance and preventive measures to reduce the spread of the disease.
The Ministry of Health points out that dengue fever can be fatal, particularly for people with co-morbidities, and urges citizens to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites. This includes using repellents, wearing covering clothing, and eliminating stagnant water, which serves as a breeding ground for dengue vector mosquitoes. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and encourage the public to report any suspicious symptoms.
