One hundred and twenty-seven deaths. That’s how many people have died on our roads since January 1, 2023. The latest victim is Dawooraz Choolhun, aged 71, also known as Devanand. This resident of Morcellement VRS, Plaine des Papayes was killed instantly on the evening of Wednesday December 6 after being hit head-on by a 4×4.
The accident occurred in Middle Road, Bois Mangue, Plaine des Papayes. The vehicle was driven by a 24-year-old firefighter from Roche Terre. He was given an alcohol test, which came back negative. He was driving in the direction of Mapou. He told the police he was unaware he had hit anyone. However, he went to the Plaine des Papayes police station. The police went to the scene of the accident, where they found the victim bleeding profusely from the head.
When the SAMU ambulance arrived, the doctor could only conclude that he was dead. The autopsy performed at the A.G. Jeetoo hospital attributed the death to multiple injuries. The division recorded two fatal accidents in less than 24 hours. The day before, 19-year-old Manish Narain was killed when the motorcycle he was riding crashed into a Safe City camera tower.
Dawooraz Choolhun’s funeral took place at 3pm on Thursday December 7. He was cremated in Pierrefonds, Bois Mangues, Plaine des Papayes. It should be noted that this region has recorded two accidents.
