Manchester United have wrapped up the signing of Danish international midfielder Christian Eriksen on a free transfer. The former Ajax, Tottenham, Inter Milan and Brentford player has bagged a three-year contract with the Red Devils.
“I still have major ambitions in the game. There is a huge amount that I know I can achieve, and this is the perfect place to continue my journey,” 30-year-old Eriksen said. “Manchester United is a special club, and I cannot wait to get started.”
As his short-term contract at Brentford was coming to a close, Eriksen agreed terms to sign for Manchester United. After bringing in Netherlands full-back Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord Ericksen is new manager Erik ten Hag’s second summer signing.
Following his cardiac arrest at last summer’s Euros, Eriksen was fitted with a Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD). This prevented him from playing in Serie A, hence Italian powerhouses Inter Milan were forced to release him.
After leaving Inter, Eriksen joined Brentford and had a short but fruitful spell with the Bees last year. He could have chosen to stay with the bees but Manchester United came calling. His former club Tottenham too were interested in re-signing him this summer.
Despite the interest, Eriksen chose Manchester United after holding talks with Ten Hag.
“I have seen Erik’s work at Ajax and know the level of detail and preparation that he and his staff put into every day,” he said. “It is clear that he is a fantastic coach. Having spoken with him and learned more about his vision and the way he wants the team to play, I am even more excited for the future,” said Eriksen.
