Jean Marie Moïse Plaiche, 33, succumbed to his injuries on the evening of Monday February 5. The Riche Terre resident was seriously injured on the evening of Wednesday January 24 when he was hit by a van. He was cycling on the Riche Terre freeway. The driver of the vehicle, a 22-year-old from Montebello, Pailles, was arrested on Tuesday February 6 on a charge of manslaughter. After appearing before the Pamplemousses court, he was released on bail.
It was around 10.50 pm on Wednesday January 24 when a team of police officers from the Terre Rouge police station went to the Riche Terre highway in response to a request. A cyclist had been hit by a van. The seriously injured victim was later identified as Jean Marie Moïse Plaiche, a local resident.
The man was subsequently taken to the northern hospital. After treatment, he was admitted to the intensive care unit under artificial respiration. The driver of the van had undergone an alcohol test, which proved negative.
The cyclist died at 10:30 p.m. on Monday, February 5. Early Tuesday morning, February 6, the van driver was arrested on a charge of manslaughter. He was subsequently brought before the Pamplemousses court on a provisional charge. He was subsequently released on parole.
