The Association des Consommateurs de l’île Maurice (ACIM) has finally won its case. The Court has authorized them to carry out their public protest against the increase in fuel prices and the high cost of living, this Saturday 19th March, from 2 to 4 pm in the streets of the capital. A list of conditions has been imposed for this protest. Smiling, Jayen Chellum, the secretary general of ACIM, has held a press conference in Bell Village.
Agreement between ACIM and the Police
Cancellation after cancellation since the beginning of the year, ACIM will finally be able to proceed with its first peaceful protest in 2022. Jayen Chellum had to drag the matter to Court in order to overcome the repeated objections of the Commissioner of Police, with the last refusal being on 4th March. It was the Judge Aruna Devi Narain, who finally brought the two parties to an agreement.
A series of measures imposed
On the other hand, a series of measures will have to be respected. As announced by Jayen Chellum, “according to the Court’s order, the organizers and participants will be responsible for their good conduct, behavior and discipline during the procession. The wearing of masks will be imposed, it will be necessary to keep a physical distance of one meter and the group will have to consist of only 50 people. But, nothing says that we cannot come to rally with 500 cars following us from afar. Everyone should carry a flag or banner to be more easily identified, as well as the cars“.
Shouting behind the masks
The procession will begin its march from Rue Madame and will crisscross the streets of the capital passing by the street of Jeetoo Hospital to Rue des Chartres, they will pass in front of the Central Barracks to reach the Place d’Armes and will make their way to Rue Royale, Plaine Verte, Kadaffi Square, then the Municipality of Port Louis to return to Rue Madame. Despite the masks, they will be heard!
