At a press conference held yesterday in Port-Louis, one of the active members of One Moris, Bruneau Laurette, commented on the Clifford Esther case and asked for the help of Mauritians to have recourse to the Privy Council. He also called for the reopening of the investigation into this affair, which has caused much ink to flow in Mauritius.
In the presence of Clifford Esther, members of his family and Leevy Frivet, the speaker began by describing the case of Clifford Esther as a human tragedy. “Clifford Esther, who is passionate about music, a bon vivant and a singer, is the victim of a police blunder. He was shot in the mouth and is partially paralysed. How can we speak of self-defence, and what was the aim of the person who shot Clifford Esther in the mouth? “he asks.
Pointing out that many of the files have disappeared and that some of the witnesses in the case have left, Bruneau Laurette maintained that he has contacted those who helped him, including Ericksonet Sadien, to ensure that Clifford Esther receives justice.
Appeal to the generosity of Mauritians
Maintaining that Mauritians are renowned for their generosity towards those in need, he asked our compatriots for organisations and sponsors to help Clifford Esther financially. He asked Mauritians to buy the book on the Clifford Esther affair, which sells for Rs 1000. “If 2,000 Mauritians buy the book, we could obtain the sum of Rs 2 million to have recourse to the Privy Council”, said Bruneau Laurette. He also added that Cliffiord Esther could be contacted on 59881277 to help him in his efforts.
He added: “What happened to Clifford Esther is not an isolated case. It can happen to anyone in our country. We are in favour of justice, but not injustice. We cannot allow the system to continue to get worse in Mauritius. That’s why I’m appealing to Mauritians, who have common sense, to help us so that Clifford Esther and the members of his family know the whole truth about this affair and obtain justice”.
For his part, Clifford Esther recounted how he experienced the police raid and how they were manhandled by the police. The victim of police brutality also pointed out that he has continued to suffer for 41 years and is demanding justice.
