Indian Sunil Kumar Nandeshwar and Shri Lankan Hitihanillage Subhoda Janendra Tilakaratna, Captain and Vice-Captain of Japanese ship Wakashio will know what sentence they will undergo on December 27.
Both have been found guilty by the Intermediate Court of Endangering Safe Navigation. Both men were in charge of Japanese vessel MV Wakashio that ran aground on the barrier reef along the south-east coast of Mauritius on 25 July 2020. Oil leakage started days after the drama. The captain is from Madhya Pradesh, India and is an experience sailor having travelled from India to Mauritius on several occasions.
The captain maintained the story that there was a birthday party among the crew and that he allowed the ship to navigate near the shores of Mauritius for internet connections. He and his assistant has asked for mercy and leniency from the Court. Whether this will be granted will be known on December 27.
