Mr Richarno Colin, who scored a one round knockout of Mr Yahia Abdelli of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria in the Men’s 60-63.5kg Category at the African Boxing Confederation (AFBC) African Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championships, in Maputo, in Mozambique, on 17 September 2022, received a warm welcome, on Monday, at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Plaisance.
The Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Recreation, Mr Stephan Toussaint, members of the Association Mauricienne de Box Amateur, and families of Mr Richarno Colin and Mr Merven Clair were present at the event.
Mr Merven Clair, who took the silver medal at the Championships following his defeat against Mr Hamza El Barbari Kingdom of Morocco in the Men’s 67-71kg category during the finals on 17 September 2022, also returned to a floral welcome.
The Championships, held after a five-year break, enabled top male and female amateur boxers from 27 nations from the continent to compete. As a prize money event, gold medallists were awarded $10,000, silver medallists obtained $5,000 and bronze medallists got $2,500 in all categories.
Three Mauritian sportsmen participated in the AFBC African Boxing Championships, namely Messrs Richarno Colin, Merven Clair and Jean Jerry Ziggy Agathe. The latter lost 4-1 against Kenyan Nicholas Okongo Okoth who won the silver medal in the final in the Men’s 57-60kg category. Mauritius ranked eighth in this African Boxing Championships.
