Caunhye’s Report: The Inter-Ministerial Committee Formed

On Friday, the Prime Minister announced the establishment of an inter-ministerial committee to consider the recommendations of the Caunhye Commission. He said that Attorney General Maneesh Gobin would chair the body. Now the identities of the other six members are known. They are Steven Obeegadoo, Alan Ganoo, Avinash Teeluck, Soodesh Callichurn, Fazila Jeewa-Daureeawoo and Mahen Seeruttun. The committee will meet for the first time after Steven Obeegadoo is back in the country. It should be noted that former Justice Asraf Caunhye and his assessors, Senior Puisne Judge Nirmala Devat and Justice Gaitree Manna, made several recommendations on the powers and appointment of a president of the Republic. In some cases, the Constitution will have to be amended. Maneesh Gobin, the chairman, said the committee will divide the work. Some members will deal with constitutional amendments and others with amendments to other pieces of legislation.
