The trial of Arvin Boolell’s Constitutional Complaint against the Speaker, Sooroojdev Phokeer has ended on Tuesday 8th March 2022 at the Supreme Court.
The representative of Boolell, Me. Rajesh Unnuth, made his plea, which was by the plea of Me. Priya Varma, as representative of the Attorney General. Thereafter, Judges Karuna Devi Gunesh-Balaghee and Denis Mootoo have reserved their judgment.
In his argument, Me. Rajesh Unnuth has countered some of the arguments of Me. Ravind Chetty, the lawyer of Sooroojdev Phokeer. The latter had said that the case was no longer relevant because Arvin Boolell had resumed his seat and that this judgment would only be academic. Me. Unnuth has disputed this position and said that even without the present action, Arvin Boolell would have resumed his seat. He added that a suspension of 8 sittings is irrational and unreasonable.
