The lifeless body of Johnatan Dominigo Smith, a 48-year-old fisherman living on rue Macadam, Baie du Tombeau, was fished out of the Baie du Tombeau lagoon shortly before noon on Saturday July 1. Divers from the National Coast Guard (NCG) recovered the body of the 40-year-old from a depth of one metre and a distance of one hundred and fifty metres from the beach.
A team of police officers from the Baie du Tombeau police station, led by Sergeant Pawnowa, went to Rue Carangue in this coastal village following a request at around 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, July 1. A black Sohail motorcycle with a headlight on its stand facing the sea was found. Nothing strange was observed, until three NCG divers arrived.
They fished out the body of a man in his forties, wearing a red T-shirt and beige shorts. His clothes were full of mud. He was placed in a disaster bag before being transported to the morgue of the Dr A.G.Jeetoo Hospital, Port-Louis by Baie du Tombeau police officers.
The victim was subsequently identified as local resident Johnatan Dominigo Smith. An autopsy performed on the body by Dr. Sudesh Kumar Gungadin, head of the police forensic department late on Saturday afternoon, July 1, attributed his death to asphyxia due to drowning. An investigation has been launched to shed light on the exact circumstances of this tragedy.
