Avengers Back in Action

Must Read

The Avengers are back in business with their incomplete cases including Soopramanien Kistnen, Pravin Kanakiah and Faheza Mooniaruth, complaints against the MBC and the various “Private Prosecutions” that have not been pursued. They are fully loaded!

Parallel investigations by foreign experts

They want justice! Rama Valayden, during his press briefing on Tuesday 22 February, made it clear that the Kistnen case remains the biggest battle to be won and that he deplored the fact that the institutions have put this case aside. “For me, the Kistnen case is a national disgrace. Silence is complicity. We won the case, the magistrate said it was a crime. Almost all the institutions of the Republic seem to have forgotten the Kistnen case… the Avengers are reviving the machine.” Rama Valayden asked the DPP’s office to give them access to all the statements, reports and documents so that the Avengers could open a parallel investigation. “We have very experienced people in Mauritius, India, England, France and South Africa who are ready to give us a hand in solving this case,” he said, lamenting the destroyed evidence that was hidden and disappeared from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and other important items that were never sent for analysis such as the DNA discovered by his group but not yet taken into consideration.

Rama Valayden was accompanied by his brothers in arms, Mr Anoop Goodary and Mr Sanjeev Teeluckdharry, but also had the opportunity to introduce Ms Priya Balgobin, a new Avenger with a decade of experience in the legal field as a practitioner and lecturer at the UOM.

Mauritius is thirsty for truth

Other strong complaints from the Avengers included the injustice that the population suffers with regards to information. He referred to the Rs 150 fee that people pay to receive “manipulated information“. He also spoke about the delay in the promotion exercise in the police which would make or rather, keep our system failing. In response to a question from the press on the death of Kaya, Rama Valayden said that he was working in the interests of the Topize family and that the whole Kaya affair was rooted in a desire to penalise Gandia in Mauritius. He explained his absence from the country during this period of national drama and riots. “I was in Rodrigues to defend the cause of the fishermen… not to run away from my responsibilities” he said. Among his other announcements, he stated that a ʹPrivate Prosecutionʹ was lodged against the Minister of Health, Kailesh Jagutpal and a letter that will be addressed to the Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth for more specific answers on certain cases that are close to their hearts.

In short, the Avengers are back in force. The group of lawyers believe that public demonstrations would help them in their multiple causes. They are waiting for the lifting of health restrictions to launch a series of targeted rallies because “Mauritius is thirsty for truth”, concluded Rama Valayden.
