A document from the Okiyo Maritime Corporation, representing the Japanese owners of the MV Wakashio, is circulating in the Mahebourg region. According to Ashok Subron, this is a conspiracy between the Mauritian state and the representatives of the Japanese owners of the MV Wakashio. He explains that this document aims at relegating all the rights of Mauritians following the ecological damage caused by the Wakashio oil spill and also clears the Mauritian State and the Japanese owner. In return for a compensation of Rs 30 000.
Ashok Subron wonders why such a document should be signed when no one has yet established the ecological and social damage caused by the MV Wakashio.
According to him, this is a serious conspiracy between the Mauritian government and the Japanese. Moreover, he adds, the whole affair surrounding the MV Wakashio was done in total opacity.
Ashok Soubron confided that he has been mandated by more than 2,500 inhabitants of the region to take legal action against the owners of the Wakashio and claims to have already started the legal procedures. Those who want to join the movement will be able to do so from 10 to 12 September in Mahebourg. He also asked Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth for an explanation of the document.
