The sequel to DC’s successful superhero flick Aquaman will star Amber Heard again as Mera, a character who has caused controversy in Hollywood following her split from American actor Johnny Depp.
The journey to bring Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, directed by James Wan, to theatres has been extensive. Despite the difficulties, the movie is about to make its eagerly anticipated debut in December, despite some worrying developments.
A few people even dubbed it “unwatchable” after watching early test screenings, which left viewers unimpressed. The movie faced a laborious post-production process as well, which included three rounds of pricey reshoots.
The connection between Amber Heard and the Aquaman film series is another significant problem. In 2016, the actress, well known for her work in The Rum Diary and 3 Days to Kill, accused her ex-husband Johnny Depp in public of physically abusing her while they were still together while she said he was under the influence of narcotics and alcohol.
Depp suffered significant financial losses in terms of future movie roles as a result of Disney and other studios cutting connections with him due to the allegations. Depp then filed a defamation lawsuit against Heard in 2022, which led to a public trial where Depp won and was given over $10 million in damages.
Fans supported Depp during the legal dispute between him and Heard, which led to online abuse of Heard. It was at this time that a petitions urged for her removal from the sequel while some fans even suggesting a replacement, Emilia Clarke.
Although DC didn’t completely cut Heard from the movie, rumours say that in order to appease critics, her part as Mera has been changed. Heard’s character is reportedly still present, similar to how she appeared in the 2018 Aquaman movie, according to contradicting reports.
In any case, Mera will make an appearance in the follow-up, and the plot might indicate that she and Arthur have a kid since the events of the first movie. Heard’s comeback to the superhero franchise is hinted at in a teaser trailer released by Warner Bros. to promote Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Observant viewers saw a scene in the teaser that featured a burning house, which might have been Tom Curry’s new residence. Mera can be seen sprinting towards the building in this quick image, attempting saving the day.
There may be a connection between the two sequels because Mera looks to be wearing a greenish outfit from the original Aquaman movie. Heard, though, is anticipated to appear in this sequel wearing a new, more blue-tinted outfit.
Though the teaser trailer keeps Mera in the background, the studio seems upbeat about the film while fans are still cautious about Heard’s return to DC.
