In an exclusive interview on MBC yesterday, Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth did not hide his satisfaction with the decision taken by the creditors of Air Mauritius in favour of the plan presented by the company’s voluntary administrators.
As a reminder, the government had invested the sum of Rs 12.5 billion in the company.
The Prime Minister has made us understand the importance that Air Mauritius has for the economy of countries. “We only had two choices, be it that the company closed its doors or that it continues its mission as always,” he says. So the government has set up its entire staff in order to be able to save Air Mauritius and as many jobs as possible.
The aviation company has not only contributed to our economy by bringing tourists and businessmen to Mauritius. But during the pandemic crisis, the role that Air Mauritius played has been seen by all. Thanks to our fleet of planes, we have been able to take the necessary medical equipment, medicines and vaccines against Covid-19 in such an emergency situation.
We were also able to maintain exports for our income and run our businesses without forgetting the import of our necessities. It must also be made clear that without Air Mauritius, the matching of our citizens stranded in other countries around the world would have been impossible.
“Now, we have to look at the future,” the Prime Minister tells us. Tomorrow is the complete reopening of our borders. So, it is important to have an airline so that we can work in the same direction with the government’s objectives of reviving our economy.
“Being more under voluntary administration, it’s a big job that awaits us,” he says.
